We used ISRI to assess the ability of existing Nature Reserves to conserve medicinal plants because the Nature Reserves with high ISRI values have large areas with generally high plant species richness and are also suitable for the growth of medicinal plants (Yu et al., 2013). Thus, ISRI values can serve as a proxy for the level of conservation importance for each Nature Reserve. For example, Daomugou, Tiangangchaoyang, Songhuajiangsanhu, Xinkaihe, Maoershan, Jiangnanlaoyinggou, and Heilonggong may be able to provide protection and investigation zones. To conserve these species, the Nature Reserves must be monitored in terms of their annual mean WZ4002 and precipitation seasonality, namely, precipitation. These areas should be considered high priorities for acquiring additional reserve lands and conservationists working in these regions must adopt in situ and ex situ conservation methods and medicinal plant harvesting guidelines (Hansen et al., 1991).
Conservation officials may be able to propose new conservation and observation areas due to the high ISRI values we recovered in some areas (Table 4). For the areas with high plant species richness outside of existing Nature Reserves, it will be important to establish more areas of conservation and cultivation in order to retain and use the medicinal plants (Lewis et al., 1990; Fig. 2). Even so, protection and cultivation measures should not be hastily implemented and it will be important to commit in reaching short-term conservation goals. In addition, long-term planning for the conservation of these plants can be attained through the use of analyses of flora species richness, such as the ones we describe here.
